Z-Trap Placement and Installation Instructions
Step 1: Placing the Z-Trap
Traps should be deployed near the field’s edge. Allow for enough space such that equipment may pass without disturbing the trap, but traps should be placed as close to the edge of the field as possible. Ideal locations for trap deployment are sites upwind of the target field. Sites that are also adjacent to a neighboring field of corn are preferred if prevailing winds lead into or out of these fields. If a second deployment site is desired for the same field, it can be placed on the opposite edge of the field, downwind. Additional traps can be placed for additional coverage, but should be no closer than 33 yards (30.18 m) to the closest trap.
Step 2: Posting the Z-Trap
Posts used to hang the traps should be seven feet tall and should be driven into the ground between 12-18 inches using a fence post driver. When finished driving the post into the ground, it should stand straight without further support. For u-channel posts, select ones that have 3/8-inch holes evenly spaced along their length. A six-inch eye bolt should be secured in the top hole of the post with a nut, washer, and lock washer on each side of the post.
Step 3: Securing the Z-Trap
Use a secure hook or carabiner to hang the trap from the eye bolt. Once the trap is hung, it should rest a little less than six feet off the ground. Also, to keep the trap from turning in the wind, secure the throat of the base close to the pole with the zip-ties provided. Both open ends of the trap should be unobstructed by either the post or other obstacles. After the first pass of bad weather, check the traps and determine if posts have shifted. If so, replace the posts in such a way that such shifts do not occur in the future.
Step 4: Install the appropriate lure
Prior to turning the trap on, you must place a pheromone lure in the trap. The appropriate lure will be sent to you ahead of the trapping season. The lure should be installed by attaching it to one of the nylon screw ends protruding through the side of the hut assembly near the charging bars. The pheromone lure is specific to one insect species and will last about 4 weeks after opening the lure package. Only one type of pheromone can be used at a time in the Z-Trap. If you are monitoring more the one species at a time, you will need multiple Z-Traps placed a minimum of 33 yards apart in the field.
Step 5: Power-up and verify the cellular signal strength.
Your Z-Trap is being sent to you fully charged and ready to power-up. To turn it on, press the orange Z-Trap 1 Power Button (front center of the unit) for three seconds. The orange LED will light up when the trap is on. After the trap is powered up, you can verify the cellular signal strength indicated by the LEDs found below the power button. The green LEDs will chase back and forth while the trap tries to reach the cloud. One to three green lights will indicate your signal is sufficient. If a red power light flashes, a weak signal is indicated, and the trap should be relocated to an area with a stronger signal. If you have no lights, the connection was unsuccessful. Turn off the device by pressing the power button for three seconds, then turn it back on to try again. If the problem persists, relocate the trap to an area with a stronger signal.
